Making Meaning in a Global Life

In today's fast-paced and often chaotic life, it’s common to feel a sense of disconnection or uncertainty about our purpose. Many of us grapple with profound questions about identity, meaning, and what it means to truly live, especially with added layers of frequent moves to different cultures. If you’re searching for a space to explore these feelings and connect with others who share your journey, this Online Existential Discussion Group may be just what the doctor ordered.

This group will run again when there are enough interested participants.

What Is This Group About?

This group offers a unique opportunity to engage in thoughtful discussions and personal exploration over six weeks. This is more than a book club like gathering - it’s a journey to your soul (and there’s no reading). Together, we will dive into questions about who we are, why we’re here, and what we want to do with our time on Earth. Each session has been carefully curated and will have expert facilitation, allowing participants to share openly and learn from one another.

Topics We’ll Explore

  1. Exploring Existential Concepts
We’ll start with the fundamentals of existentialism (or the philosophy around the struggles of existing), examining how these ideas apply to our daily lives. This foundation will help us understand how big lofty questions are relevant no matter who we are, where we are, or whether or not we can disguise the Drexel furniture.

  2. Identity and Authenticity
Together, we’ll explore what it means to maintain our sense of self amid societal (and embassy) expectations and constant change. We’ll discuss what it means to be authentic when we constantly need to wear masks for different roles and code switch across groups and languages.

  3. Navigating Anxiety and Uncertainty
Life is filled with uncertainties, and it’s natural to feel anxious about the unknown. We’ll talk about the balance of finding our solid ground and how to judge these hopeless feelings less when we’re done trying to figure out how to find duct tape in this country.

  4. Finding Meaning in Adversity
We’ll share personal experiences of hardship and explore how challenges can lead to profound insights and personal growth. We’ll also spend some time honoring the real grief of loss. Loss of family, friends, routine, community, ease, safety, convention, the ability to get mail at your house, etc. We’ll probably spend more time on the latter to be honest.

  5. Building Connections
The importance of relationships cannot be overstated. We’ll delve into how our connections with others shape our understanding of meaning and belonging, even when we’re far from home. Hopefully you’ll come away with some new ideas about what network can mean. It’s okay if your neighbor is your life for three years and then you never speak to them again.

  6. Creating Your Own Meaning
Finally, we’ll focus on actionable strategies for cultivating meaning and purpose in your life. Empower yourself to make choices that align with your true values and aspirations. No one is saying your whole life will change in 6 weeks, but hey, hopefully you’ll have some ideas you want to hold on to. How can you make FS work for you or what might be next that works better?
